In accordance with Christian Orthodox tradition a screen seperates the choir from the congregation. Hidden from the congregation, the positioning of the choir contributes to the angelic nature of Byzantine music. It also avoids distraction from prayer and the Liturgy by the "performance" of  choir. It is consistent with members of the choir being humble servants of Christ and forgoing their ego regardless of the level of their musical skills.
