Together with other Australian & New Zealand parishes of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad we are privileged to know well Vladyka Hilarion as the ruling bishop of our diocese. While continuing in this role he has been elected and elevated as the Metropolitan of ROCOR, having received all but one vote (his own) of the members of the Synod of Bishops of ROCOR.
We, as a parish, feel a special connection with Vladyka because he encourged and mentored our Parish Priest, Father Adrian Augustus, in his search for a spiritual home which he found in Christian Orthodoxy. Fr. Adrian was formerly an Anglican deacon in India. Vladyka fascilitated Fr. Adrian coming to Australia from India.
Metropolitan Hilarion of ROCOR is not to be confused with Metropolitan Hilarion Alfeyev, Metropolitan of Volokolamsk, the chairman of the Department of External Church Relations and a permanent member of the Holy Synod of the Patriarchate of Moscow.
Vladyka Hilarion has been instrumental in fascilitating the transition of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia into the 21st century. He has maintained that delicate balance between the connection of the Orthodox faith to cultural traditions while at the same time reaching out to those of a non-Russian background who are in search of the Orthodox Christian faith. This is evidenced by his promotion ofthe Christian Orthodox missions including in Indonesia, India and Pakistan, Haiti and amongst the Australian indeginous community. he has also actively encoraged those of non-Russian speaking background to become clergy including priests.

Vladyka Hilarion while a leader is at the same time humble and would not condone any form of personality following of himself or other members of the clergy. However some insight into his life and teachings can be a useful resource in our Orthodox Christian journey.
